My First successful Crocheted Wallet Pattern (Christmas Themed) W/FREE Pattern

Writer's picture: ChristinaChristina

I came up with this pattern about a year ago in 2021. I was looking for tutorials for this kind of crochet wallet pattern, but couldn't find it. There were some that looked nice, but they weren't what I was a looking for. As such, I came up with my own pattern. I have a few prototypes of it, and when I finally came up with this design and pattern I was so proud of myself. It's my first ever pattern that I created on my own. The original wallet is actually pink yarn (Red Heart brand). But, in October of 2021 I made this Christmas version and showed it to the women in my FB crochet group. They loved it so much that they asked me to make a tutorial video. (There is another reason for me creating a tutorial video for my group, but that's not important.)

Anyway, this is what it looks like.

It's made of 3 panels, a trimmed 7" polyester zipper, and a button closure.

So, I made a tutorial on this, but it is not yet available for my YT channel that I am working on. There is some fine tuning I need to do to the tutorial before posting it for all eyes to see.

But, despite that, I am posting the free pattern for it here:

ENJOY!!

Assembly

Sewing Panels Together

· Line up all 3 panels in order of first in the front and third in the back

· Hold them together with either St markers or Clips, lining them up at Row 12

· Insert hook from front to back of all 3 panels and Sl St in your working yarn, secure in place in R12 with a Sl St and Sl St all along the lined up edges, through all 3 panels.

Adding Button

  • Line up the button with the loop and button hole of the flap, and sew the button into that spot with matching thread and house needle.

Adding Zipper

  • How to back stitch: Bring your thread up from the bottom to hide the knot. Stab your needle down at a ¼” away from where you came up. Bring your needle back up ¼” away from where you last stabbed down, and then stab back down in that same last stabbed down spot. “Rinse and repeat.” Bring your needle up ¼” away from stabbing down, and then stab back down in that last stab down spot.

· Use a7” matching polyester zipper.

· Measure it to your back pocket by placing the zipper pull side on the left. Then straighten it out and put a mark where the tail end meets the end of the pocket. And make another mark ¾” to the right of the first mark, towards the tail.

· To cut it down to size we need to first sew in a new stopper (use matching thread) by doubling up your thread on a needle. Make a knot with both ends and sew over the zipper teeth with your thread on both sides of the teeth on the spot you marked closer to the zipper pull. Make sure you start from under the zipper to hide the knot.

· Next, make sure the stopper works. Test it by unzipping the zipper. If the zipper pull stops against the sewn stopper, go ahead and knot the thread (under the zipper) into the fibers of the zipper to secure it in place. And then cut the tail end on that second mark you made.

· After your zipper is prepared, sew it in using the back stitch with matching thread by hand with a fairly small needle. You will need to use pins to help hold the zipper in place as you sew.

  • First have the zipper unzipped for the whole sewing process and pin one side of the zipper to the middle panel with the pull on your left.

  • Then do a back stitch across starting from the zipper pull end. Make sure that the zipper teeth are just barely above the middle panel and that you’re grabbing just some of the yarn fibers as you stitch along. Your stitches don’t need to be perfect. Just make sure that the zipper is secure with the stitches.

  • And then pin the other side of the zipper to the 3rd panel while keeping it lined up with the sewn side so that it will zip up properly. Start your back stitching from the tail end towards the zipper pull.

  • Then lastly sew the two front ends together, making sure to hide the thread and knot.

And now you are finished with the wallet.

Yay!
